The Safekeep is set in the Netherlands in 1961. There are three parts to the novel. In the first, we get to know an ice-cold woman named Isabel. In the second part, she softens to the point of melting thanks to a lesbian affair. And then there is the third part that lets you know what the book is really about. And to say anything at all about part three is to say too much.
So, call me a prude, but this book – like another recent and popular novel, All Fours – had way too much sex in it for me.
However, I felt rewarded for making it through section two when I read section three. It turns the book into historical fiction exactly as promised by the label the library had pasted to the spine of the book.
And this was a part of history I had never explored before, and I am enriched for knowing about it.
But oh my, so much sex.
