I like books where the author kills off a character and follows them into heaven. I love to learn the rules and regulations there. Can you check on – or visit – earthly loved ones from above? Is there reincarnation? How does it work when a loved one joins you in heaven years later? And so forth.
That being the case, a book with the rules and regulations of hell is an intriguing topic to me and I loved this book.
Since A Short Stay in Hell is so brief – only 100 pages – I will try to be brief too. But there’s just so much to think about and talk about!
The novel opens with five people sitting before a devil-like character and learning immediately that unless they had followed the correct religion – Zoroastrianism – they are condemned to hell.
A Christian objects! He has been saved! But poof! Off he is sent to an appropriate brand of hell for him.
The same is true for a confirmed atheist.
Individualized hells are given to each person and the reader goes off to a library-like hell with the fifth person, a man named Soren Johansson who had been a Mormon in his lifetime.
It is 18 pages into the book that he reads a Welcome to Hell letter setting out nine rules to follow for “a pleasant stay.”
He is also informed that a food kiosk will provide any food he requests. (As we come to learn, there is Cap’n Crunch in Hell.)
Rule #2 is particularly interesting. It lets Soren know there is a way out of this hell when it says, “Don’t get discouraged. Remember nothing lasts forever. Someday this will be a distant memory.”
Thus “eternity” goes under the microscope as do other religious concepts like biblical verses and religious saviors.
Suffice it to say that all such concepts get skewered in this very hellish hell.
