Thank you for reading the story, In a Billy Joel State of Mind.
Its takeaway is: Forgive unto Others as You Would Have Them Forgive unto You.
Now grab your notebook or journal and if this line evokes something in you, write down what you are thinking.
If not, here are three prompts – borrowed from the story – to write about instead:
- Is there someone with whom you have been angry for a long time? Do you even remember what happened? Write it all down along with a list of five benefits of remaining angry and five problems with being angry.
- Is there someone who is angry with you? Is their anger justified? If it’s justified, perhaps write a letter of apology. If their anger is not justified, write a letter calmly explaining the situation from your point of view. Whichever letter your write, you don’t have to send it. This is just an exercise to help you think through the situation from today’s perspective. Things can change with time…
- Have you done something that you regret and for which you need to forgive yourself? The story gives you a good reason to do this. Write a formal letter of forgiveness to yourself and stash it somewhere that you can find it easily when regret peaks out at you down the road.
As always, write about one of these prompts or all of them. There is no right or wrong, just what feels best to you.
