Thank you for reading the story, “Three Reasons to Write in a Journal.”
Its takeaway is: When your heart speaks, take good notes.
Now grab your notebook or journal and if this line evokes something in you, write down what you are thinking.
If not, here are three prompts – borrowed from the story – to write about instead:
- Writing in a journal is a great way to work out a problem. Write down a problem you are having. Now add its history – all the things that led up to the problem. Write your current stance on the situation. Now pretend to send it off to a Dear Abby sort of columnist. What would that unbiased person advise? Do you agree with her opinion?
- Do the writing sprint I suggest in this chapter. Set a timer for five or ten minutes and keep your pencil moving the whole time as you answer the question: “I feel miserable because…”
- Journaling is a great way to immortalize the wonderful things other people say and do. So write down all the adorable things you remember that your kids or grandkids said when young. Or write down ways in which your loved ones have shown you great kindness. Even if you have told these stories 100 times. Write them down. It will be a well of happiness for a rainy day.
As always, write about one of these prompts or all of them. There is no right or wrong, just what feels best to you.
