Thank you for reading the story, “Being the Patient vs the Visitor in the Emergency Room.”
Its takeaway is: Choose life and live it.
Now grab your notebook or journal and if this line evokes something in you, write down what you are thinking.
If not, here are three prompts – borrowed from the story – to write about instead:
- This story begins with a hospital nurse asking me this question: “If your heart stops, do you want us to resuscitate you?” Write your answer to that terrible question.
- It is very disconcerting to be in an emergency room – whether as a patient or a visitor. Write about an experience you have had in one of those positions. No matter how long ago it was, I imagine it is still full of emotion.
- The one-line takeaway from this story reminds me of a line in The Shawshank Redemption – you have to get busy living or get busy dying. Write about all the actions you are taking as you choose life and live it.
As always, write about one of these prompts or all of them. There is no right or wrong, just what feels best to you.
