This is the story of a new widow named Nina Swann who meets a very handsome and charismatic man, Nick Radcliffe. It isn’t too long before he is very comfortably hanging around her gorgeous, expensive house.
Thank goodness the woman’s adult daughter, Ash, is living at home at that time. She smells something fishy about Nick, does a little sleuthing, and immediately starts to find troubling information. Namely, there are lots of holes in the background story he has told Nina.
There is a problem, though, that keeps Ash from going to her mother with her suspicions. Ash has had emotional problems in the recent past that impact her credibility. So how can she convince Nina that Nick is a con man?
Lucky for Ash, there is a lot of dirt to be dug up about Nick – such as the various names that he uses in his various marriages to other women. And there are the children he has spawned in those marriages. And the financial messes he has left behind.
As all of these back stories are revealed, the book became more and more compelling to me. I wanted to know how this guy could juggle – and rationalize the juggling – of all his lives, not to mention the fact there are truths to be found that are more shocking than just polygamy.
In notes at the end of Don’t Let Him In, the author tells us that Nick Radcliffe is not “an outlandish literary confection.” Instead, it is a fact that men like Nick exist in the world. She then gives recommended reading, listening, and watching for those who want to dig deeper into the psychology of such men. Here are her suggestions:
Books:
- Sleeping with a Psychopath by Carolyn Woods
- The Psychopath by Mary Turner Thomson
- The Bigamist: The True Story of a Husband’s Ultimate Betrayal also by Mary Turner Thomson
- No One Knew: My Emotional Journey of Being Married to a Sociopath and How I Learned to Heal by Renee Olivier.
Podcasts:
- Who the Hell is Hamish
- I Am Not Nicholas
- Dirty John
- Chasing Charlie
Documentaries:
- The Tinder Swindler
- The Puppet Master: Hunting the Ultimate Conman
- Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence
- Who TF Did I Marry (on TikTok)
I am always interested in how smart women get sucked into terrible relationships thus I really enjoyed this book and look forward to exploring the author’s suggestions for further stories of this kind.
