This is the story of a 24-year-old woman named Lucy Chase who was accused of – but never found guilty of – murdering her best friend, Savannah. “Savvy” died from several violent blows to the head, and Lucy was found hours after the murder covered in Savvy’s blood. However, she had no memory of what had happened.
While no court of law proved Lucy’s guilt, many people in small-town Plumpton, Texas were sure she was the murderer. Even her parents. And her husband at the time, Matt. Actually, just about the only person who thought she was innocent was her grandmother. Thus ultimately, Lucy moves out of town.
As the book opens, five years have passed since the murder and Lucy’s memory has not returned. What has returned is Lucy to Plumpton. She has come at her grandmother’s request to attend the grandma’s eightieth birthday party.
This is problematic because a podcaster, Ben Owens, who looks into cold cases involving real crimes, is also in Plumpton. Of course, he is looking into Savvy’s death, which has the entire town all stirred up again.
Perhaps it is madness to bring Lucy back to town, but there is method to the grandma’s madness. She is sure Lucy is innocent and she thinks Ben Owens can solve the murder and clear Lucy’s name. Hence, she lures Lucy back to town for her birthday.
I’ll take a moment to say that when I “read” a book, I like to have two copies at the same time, the eBook and the audiobook. That way I can read when I am home and listen when I drive in the car. This game plan paid off brilliantly with Listen for the Lie because the audio book is an absolute ton of fun.
There are two audiobook narrators. January Lavoy reads the chapters about Lucy. These chapters alternate with podcast episodes read by Will Damron. There is even theme music that plays before and after a podcast chapter. As I said, it was a lot of fun to listen to.
I have to say that in the course of the book almost everyone seemed like the murderer to me. Even Lucy’s parents…and Matt. Additionally, everyone in town seemed to be having an affair that added to their potential guilt. Even Lucy’s parents…and Matt. And don’t get me started on Savvy’s boyfriend, Colin Dunn. He’s slept with everyone!
Truly, the only exception was the grandmother. Well, she sleeps around too, but there was never any reason to doubt her innocence and it was wonderful to see that she never doubted Lucy’s.
Therefore, the two best things about this book were the audiobook narrators and the granny!
It’s a fun book, and I recommend it.
