I don’t know how to write about this book without giving too much away. So I will tell a little tiny bit about the plot, and then I will throw out some other interesting stuff. Bottom line, I really enjoyed this book and invite you to become intrigued by it.
The book is presented in three parts.
- The first part is 93 pages long. It introduces the love triangle of three college students. There are two men, Sam Gallagher and Yash Thakkar, and one woman, nicknamed Jordan. The entire book is written from Jordan’s point of view.
- The second part is only 20 pages long. It takes place twenty-one years later when Yash and Jordan see each other again for the first time. He comes to visit Jordan at her home and meets her husband, Silas, and her young sons, Jack and Harry. Jordan wonders why on earth he’s come to visit, but the reader doesn’t learn the reason until part three…
- Which is 69 pages, and takes place five or six years after part two. Jordan finds herself in another triangle of sorts when she is torn between her family’s needs and Yash’s. This section was heart-pounding for me. So much was at stake on both sides, and I feared Jordan would make the wrong decision.
Here are some bits of information as promised.
- PBS News Hour recently had a segment on the best books of 2025. One of the critics they interviewed was Maureen Corrigan and her second favorite novel for the year was Heart the Lover. (Her first pick was The Antidote by Karen Russell.)
- Many reviewers have commented that this book is both a prequel and a sequel to Lily King’s novel, Writers & Lovers from 2021. I find that concept difficult to wrap my brain around, but at the same time, it’s true. It’s also crazy but true that you don’t need to have read Writers & Lovers to LOVE this new book. (I read and loved both. See my other review here.)
- In the first section of the book, Jordan learns how to play a card game, Sir Hincomb Funnibuster. Learning about the game will give an understanding of the novel’s title. Interestingly, this is a real game, and Lily King has instructions on how to play it on her website. Click here for her pdf.
I seem to like three bullet points at a time, so I will close with three more:
- I really loved Jordan’s husband, Silas.
- I want to know more about a character named Daisy.
- And while Heart the Lover might be a prequel and sequel to Writers & Lovers, it also sets the reader up for a third book, about which I say: Please, Lily King, please. This is a great “series.” Tell us more!

If you like my writing, I hope you will check out my new book, Chai on Life. “Chai” is a mystical word in Hebrew. It is pronounced “high” making this book High on Life with a Jewish slant. It is available wherever books are sold including Amazon.
