This is a brief little book, but a classic. Originally published in hardcover by Simon & Schuster in 1938, the latest edition is a paperback with deckled edges that came out in 2021. It is currently very popular on Goodreads with over 24,000 ratings. On Amazon, 1600 people give it an average of 4.6 stars out of 5.0.
Since the book can easily be read in an hour, I would do a disservice by writing too much about it. But let me just say…
This is the story of the correspondence between two men, Martin Schulse and Max Eisenstein. Evidently, they had been business partners in San Francisco, owning an art gallery. The letters are written between November, 1932 and March, 1934, after Martin’s move back to his homeland of Germany.
Through Martin’s end of the correspondence, we learn about the rise of Hitler. This is of special importance to Max because Max is Jewish.
From this simple setup, the author creates a unique Holocaust tale whose lesson might be: You get what you give. Or maybe: Hell hath no fury like a scorned woman’s brother.
It is a terrific small book that can generate a large amount of discussion among readers. I recommend it!
